I just recieved this email from my sister. Apparently it's true and it's really happening to people so I thought I'd post and give y'all some warning about it. I didn't try to confirm that this is happening but just in case, it's best to be aware of something like this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
90# on your telephone - Telephone Scam
I dialed "0" and asked the operator who confirmed that this was correct so please pass it on!
I received a telephone call last evening from an individual
identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician (could also be TELUS or whoever is your phone service provider) who was conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then
hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the
telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place
long distance calls billed to your home phone number. I was further
informed that this scam has been originating from many local
jails/prisons. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.
After checking with VERIZON, they said it was true, so do not dial 90#
for anyone!!!
Please pass this on to let others know what's happening!
*Edited to add:
This is a real scam but it's NOT directed at residents. It's for business owners and company's that use the PBX telephone system. The ones that you have to dial 9 to get to a outside line. SO if you own a business or you work for someone who uses the PBX system you have a bit of information to help keep your company secure.
